For Investment Consultants
Allocator Desk for Investment Consultants
The manager research and advice record for investment consulting firms.
Investment consulting runs on two parallel workflows: centralized manager research and client-specific advice. The operational challenge is keeping those workflows synchronized across dozens of client relationships, each with its own IPS, constraints, committee process, and decision history. Allocator Desk connects firm-level manager research to client-specific recommendations, client responses, follow-ups, and consultant rationale - so the firm can show what was advised, why it was advised, what the client decided, and what changed later.
The workflow today
A consulting firm runs a central research team that builds and maintains a rated manager universe, and client-facing consultants who recommend from that universe based on each client's IPS and constraints.
Research output (ratings, monitoring updates, deep-dive memos) needs to flow consistently to every client where the manager is relevant - and back the other way when a client meeting surfaces a material observation.
Recommendations carry fiduciary weight. When a client accepts, rejects, delays, or modifies a recommendation, the rationale needs to stay attached to the original advice.
When a manager underperforms or a key person leaves, the firm needs to demonstrate exactly which clients were notified, when, and what was recommended.
What gets lost today
Research-to-recommendation trail
A research downgrade reaches some clients quickly and others slowly - rarely is the full distribution log captured.
Client-meeting observations
Consultants hear material things in client meetings that should feed back to research - the loop is often informal.
Recommendation history per client
What was recommended, what the client accepted, rejected, or modified, and why - this audit trail is uneven across the firm.
Conflicts and capacity tracking
When a manager has limited capacity, allocation across clients needs documented fairness - often unmanaged.
Risks that show up in diligence and governance
Fiduciary recommendation consistency
Clients with similar mandates should receive consistent advice, or the reason for different recommendations should be documented and reviewable.
Advice-versus-decision ambiguity
When a client accepts, rejects, delays, or modifies a recommendation, the firm needs a clear record of what was advised, what the client decided, and why.
Recommendation lag risk
The time between a research view change and the client-specific recommendation is one of the firm's most important operational risks.
Conflicts and capacity pressure
Capacity-constrained managers, co-invest opportunities, GP relationships, and other soft conflicts require a transparent recommendation and allocation record.
Client transition risk
When a lead consultant leaves or a client is reassigned, the new consultant needs the full recommendation history immediately.
How Allocator Desk becomes the system of record
Manager research layer
Centralized manager universe with rating history, monitoring notes, signals, and a complete audit trail of view changes.
Client coverage layer
Per-client mandates, IPS constraints, and recommendation history linked back to the research layer.
Advice record
Every recommendation captured with rationale, alternatives considered, client response (accepted, rejected, delayed, modified), and the consultant's reasoning - reviewable years later.
Signals and obligations
Research-level signals propagate to every affected client; client-specific follow-ups and obligations are tracked per relationship.
Audit and records bundles
Read-only bundles for client audits, regulatory exams, or new-consultant handoffs.
Example fields and workflows tracked
- Manager rating history with rating change rationale
- Recommendation log per client (recommended / accepted / rejected / modified) with rationale
- Research distribution log (which clients were informed, when, action taken)
- Client-meeting observation feedback to research
- Capacity allocation across clients per constrained manager
- Conflicts disclosure log per recommendation
- Lead consultant transition handoff briefing per client
Common questions
We have a proprietary research system.
Most proprietary systems capture research output. Allocator Desk captures the advice workflow: which clients were affected, what was recommended, how the client responded, and what follow-up occurred.
Each consultant tracks their own clients.
That is the audit problem. Allocator Desk creates a firm-level record that protects both the consultant and the firm when recommendations, client decisions, or research views are questioned later.
How is this different from an OCIO workflow?
For consultants, Allocator Desk preserves the advice record: research view, recommendation, client response, and follow-up. For OCIOs, the workflow may extend further into implementation and portfolio action.
